PSA Granted 501(c)(3)Status

The Portland Society of Architects recently was granted 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status by the Internal Revenue Service. The new IRS designation recognizes PSA as a non-profit, volunteer-driven organization whose educational efforts promote the progress and economic development of Greater Portland.

Among the more notable 501(c)(3) benefits now afforded PSA and its supporters are the tax-deductibility of charitable contributions made by individuals and corporate donors, and the organization’s ability to apply for government and private grants.

“PSA’s tax-exempt status opens up a world of new possibilities for the organization, including the potential for increased funding to support more robust, thought-provoking  programs,” remarked PSA President Paul Stevens, a principal at Portland-based design firm SMRT.

PSA received widespread acclaim recently for its two-day Rising Tides symposium addressing the impact of sea-level rise on Greater Portland and beyond. Other popular programs this year included the Unbuilt Design Awards; a summer lecture series featuring tours of Temple Bet Ha’am and the new Portland Jetport terminal; and roundtable discussions regarding form-based codes and project delivery systems.
