in plain sight | site at the UNE Art Gallery

October 17 @ 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM

in plain sight | site is a new PSA series exploring + touring architectural gems throughout the Portland region.  Our inaugural tour begins with the UNE Art Gallery on the Portland Campus on Wednesday, October 17th at noon.

Currently on display is a UNE faculty exhibit AND the history of the building: Inside The Cube: Looking Back Over 40 Years

The UNE Art gallery was designed by architect Thomas Larson and constructed by the  Architects Collaborative in 1977.  The Art Gallery represents the popularity of the white cube, modular architecture and “International Style.” The “cube” design of the UNE Art Gallery was meant to be just one unit of a series of cubes within a larger modular structure. Popular during the 1960s and 1970s, modular architecture allowed for incremental growth and expansion over a long time frame. Similar to the ideology of the International Style, modular architecture highlights the idea of form following function.
