PSA 2018 Brown Bag Tour: Maine Coast Waldorf High School
August 8, 2018 @ 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM
‘School’s out for the summer‘ is our 2018 theme for the PSA Brown Bag Tours. During mid-July through mid- August we have planned tours of a variety of educational institution typologies (from grade school to pre-graduate studies) that push the boundaries of innovation, high-performance and excellence in design: Waynflete’s Lower School in Portland, The Roux Center for the Environment at Bowdoin College in Brunswick, and the Maine Coast Waldorf High School in Freeport.
‘School’s out for the summer‘ concludes with a tour of the new high school at the Maine Coast Waldorf School in Freeport.
The Maine Coast Waldorf School requested a building that would support the high school’s increasing enrollment and their desire to bring the entire student body together on one campus. More than just a common school, their vision was a building that fosters creativity, inspires curiosity, demonstrates environmental stewardship, and honors the learning spirit within its occupants. The design is comprised of flexible light-filled classrooms for learning, undulating halls, efficient support spaces, and creative community spaces. The building meets net-zero energy demands, has received Passive House certification through PHIUS (PHIUS+ 2015) and Maine Advanced Building certification. We achieved this through passive solar design, high insulation levels, efficient HVAC systems, daylighting controls and shading.
